First we will assume that you have a website you created in another application - say Pagemill - and you want to convert it to Golive. I've picked Pagemill because it's a fairly simple application and I have no intention of trying to sort out the mess Frontpage makes! If you don't have an existing site and are starting from scratch, please go here.

Sorry about the retro look on this page, I no longer have Pagemill files to take screenshots of!

Don't start Golive yet.

You almost certainly have a folder that looks a bit like this, with your Pagemill pages and images inside it:

I suggest you make a copy of the entire folder and work on that - from now on, we'll assume you've done that.

Some important terms: the folder 'widget' will become the root folder of your Golive site. It contains your pages and images.

It needs to be enclosed in a project folder, so we make a new folder and put the widget folder inside it.

The new project folder is called 'widgetproject'.

Of course you will have more pages and images than this, but check your structure is like this:

Now we are ready to launch Golive. Fire it up and we see this:

Click New Site (you don't get the red arrow!)

A screen appears (not illustrated) where we can choose 'Single User' and we do that and click 'Next'.

Now we choose 'Import from Folder', then say 'Next'.

It's a personal thing, but I find it easier at this point to ignore the first option and go straight for the chance to select the home page of the existing site - so we need to Browse.
Find your way to your existing index.html page - it would make more sense at this point to have a button called 'Choose' to click, but we have to make do with 'Open'.

We are not, however, opening a page.

If you look at the arrow by the '1' you can see that the path is correct - the root folder 'widget' inside the project folder 'widgetproject'.

Click Next.

And that's enough for one page .... on to page 2 golivebasics.com home page
