Sorry if it's seeming tedious but I really want to show you every single step. Nearly there!
Now we have to let Golive create a site file. This is the most important file in your website. It never gets uploaded, but it's a kind of very complex database, where all your links and references are managed. Once you have one for your site, please always open it first - avoid doing anything at all to your site without it open.

Golive will also make a data folder and a settings folder - you can investigate those later, the main thing is to get them in the right place.

Browse.

Make sure the site file, which ends .site, goes inside your project folder, beside your root folder - like the screenshot.

You don't have to call it widget.site, but it makes sense as we've got this far with the name. No spaces, stick to lower case, no special characters.

If you're happy with this, click 'Save'.

The location for the site file is correct - check out the text in the box - so we can click 'Finish'.

Look again at the text in the box - there is no mention of the root folder, because the site file goes directly inside the project folder (widgetproject) - if anything's incorrect at this point, go back.

Success! Golive has opened your site file and now you can see your site window - this is where you manage your site.
In the Finder, you can open the folder 'widgetproject' and you should see this structure. Ignore the Backup.site by the top arrow - that's there because I took a screen shot while the site file was open. While you work on your site, Golive makes a backup site file, in case of crashes. It disappears, normally, when you close the site but if there has been a crash, you have the option of using it if the main site file is corrupted.

If you get more than one backup site file, you can ditch the earlier ones, they are there because you had some computer disasters while Golive was open. Just keep the newest.

Note the position of that 'master file' by the second arrow - it must be there, it must be in the right place, and you must open it first.

Of course the process has only just begun - when you open the pages, you might find a bit of a mess, as each application does things its own way. It's a good idea to go on now by turning the html files into something Golive can recognise a bit more easily.

Open your site file and within the site window, select an html file. In the Inspector, you see this:

StMl is short for Sitemill. Overtype this with GoMk - watch out, case is vital.
See the icon has changed to a Golive one? If it hasn't, you typed GoMk incorrectly.

Now it will open as a Golive file - but don't get too excited, they are different applications and I predict you will be hunting through the manual and visiting the forums for help. I've converted plenty of sites, it can be done, but don't expect perfection straight away.

Go back to page 1 if you need to. On the other hand, if you decide to start from scratch (or if you haven't got a site to convert and you're lost) go on to page 3. Click the logo on the right if you want to go back to the home page. golivebasics.com home page
