Page 5 : Table background image, even in Netscape 4

Soooo ..... we are making a website about our wonderful hotel and why you should stay there. We have a section about the bedrooms, and we decide to have a table, with a background image assigned. If you are using Explorer, or a later version of Netscape, that's what you should see below.

(No, I'm not too impressed either but we're doing web design, not tourism here, and it's royalty-free!)

I've filled up the empty cells with transprent gifs, sized to hold the table to about the size of the background image.

Here is our premier room ....

which overlooks the North Sea

and comes with free champagne.

In case you don't have Netscape 4 to look at the page in, here's what we get:

Here's the solution:

  • First make a 1 cell, 1 row table and give it your image as a background image.
  • Now make another table to hold your content. Give this table a background image of a transparent gif - this can be quite small, it's OK for it to tile.
  • Now add your content, making sure you have no empty cells.
  • Put this table inside the first and adjust the sizes to fit. Of course, if your outer table is bigger than the image, it will tile anyway.

Like so:

which overlooks the North Sea

and comes with free champagne.

All OK in Netscape 4.6 and 4.7 - here's a screenshot to prove it:
